Wall Treatments

Walls give a house a statement through style, color, texture and many more. Most importantly, they can be constructed and decorated using many types of materials and finishes, yet, it retains its basic structures. Understanding how walls are piled together can help you avoid the common hazards and problems that might ensue later on.

Wall treatments vary depending on the type of material used that adheres to its purpose. A wall treatment's purpose could be to add strength to its structure and at the same time function as décor. Nevertheless, whatever purpose it serves, a house is never complete without wall treatments.

Types Of Wall Treatments

One of the wall treatments you can use is a gypsum wallboard, which is a ready-made surface that you can apply on a wall and use as backing for other treatments you desire such as fabric, paneling, wallpaper, and tile. Gypsum wallboard is made from pound gypsum that is encased in paper. This wallboard is sturdy enough for use in high-moisture areas such as the kitchen, the laundry room, or the bathroom.

Plank paneling is another treatment you can apply on your wall to make it look natural cedar or pine planks. The planks can be installed in any direction, whichever looks artistic for you, or use it to accent walls and ceilings. Sheet paneling is another style of paneling that comes in many styles, colors, and patterns. It is made from plywood type material that appears like the planks.

Tile board uses the same technique as sheet paneling although it is made from hardboard. This wall treatment is available in many designs like a stamped face or solid colors to provide the appearance of ceramic tile.

Wainscoting adds accent and charm to a bare wall. It is usually installed in the dining room, covering one third of the way up and covered with a dado rail or chair rail to achieve a finished look. This technique looks more like elegantly carved wood, which makes this suitable as formal room wall treatments.

This wall treatment is an old technique which purpose is to protect damp areas of the wall specifically the lower part. Wainscoting has become so popular that manufacturers have been producing do-it-yourself units in a variety of finishes like cherry, oak, poplar, and walnut.

Ceramic tile is now more than just a bathroom wall treatment. With many designs to choose from, whether glazed or unglazed, deep textured, hand-painted, and rugged appearance. These tiles are available in many shapes as well that can be created into different patterns.

If you have not decided on the type of treatment for your wall, you can consider using painted wall treatment. As you know, paint comes in almost all the colors in the spectrum. You can also have the colors mixed by professionals to achieve a custom-made hue. Without question, using paint is the most economical way to dress up your wall.

You can use faux finishes, bold rich colors, quality and texture. Warm colors are popular for dining areas for psychological reasons. It is said that the warm colors in the spectrum stimulate energy and appetite while cool colors are conducive to sleep and relaxation.

Faux (French meaning "false") finish and as the term suggests, this type of treatment makes surfaces look rustic and aged such as a faux brick interior wall treatment. Interior designers apply this technique to imitate natural materials like leather, marble, stone, and wood. A faux finish may be a little difficult to work on so you might want to request for a sample board from to be able to follow the artist's design closely.

Wallpapers are another way to treat a wall. The variety of designs, colors, and patterns of wallpapers make them a quick treatment to achieve charm, drama, and comfort; and likewise can be applied in casual or formal rooms.
